Andrea Evans to Compete in "Dancing With The Stars" for National Kidney Foundation of Arizona

Dear Friends,

It has been an incredible privilege throughout our careers to participate in a broad spectrum of community initiatives and nonprofit organizations. As the owners of Evans Communications and Frontdoors Media, there’s nothing we enjoy more than seeing the incredible contribution so many worthy organizations are making in our community.

This year, Andrea has decided to jump into one particular cause with both feet. Literally!

Four weeks from today, Andrea will be participating this year in the “Dancing With The Stars Arizona” competition for the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona. It’s a ballroom dance competition pitting me against a group of incredibly talented and engaged community leaders, all to raise money to combat kidney disease and help those who have been affected by it. We’re writing you today to ask for your support of my efforts.

She’s doing this for a number of reasons. First of all, it’s incredibly fun, and she loves the challenge of learning to ballroom dance. She has had a blast so far with her dance partner Ivan as they have rehearsed and practiced our routine, and she’s looking forward to performing it for an audience on February 22.

Second, like so many people we know, kidney disease has had a personal effect on someone we love. Andrea’s uncle Steve has had three (three!) kidney transplants over the past 30 years, and she’s seen first-hand just how much of a challenge this has created for him, his immediate family and our extended family. He has fought through so much, and the thought of supporting an organization that helps people like him really appealed to Andrea. We’re pleased to say he will be there on February 22 to watch Andrea dance and enjoy the event!

And third, the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona is an organization that is making an incredible impact. Let us give you an example — for every $1,000 donated to the Foundation, they are able to provide a patient and a half with anti-organ-rejection medication, six people with financial assistance while they battle the disease, 370 rides for kidney patients to dialysis treatments, and 500 protein supplements for kidney disease patients. They also provide services such as the new Camp Kidney,

So, will you join Andrea’s team and consider a donation of $100 (one vote), $500, $1,000 or a $5,000 table at the event?

You can make a difference by making a tax deductible donation by:

  1. Donating online at this link.

  2. Downloading the form at this link or mailing a check to: National Kidney Foundation of Arizona with Andrea’s name in the memo line.

You can read Andrea’s column in Frontdoors Magazine on the competition here. Thank you so much! We am so grateful for your friendship and support!

Gratefully,

Andrea and Tom Evans

Celebrating An Icon with the Unveiling of Tillman Middle School

This week marked a significant milestone and exciting announcement for one of our fantastic clients. Balsz School District unveiled its new school — Tillman Middle School, previously Balsz Elementary School — at a special event for students and staff on Tuesday morning.

We were honored to be a part of this process from the start of the transition process for the school from an elementary school to a middle school in a strategic effort to better serve the district’s students. And we were proud to be part of the naming of the new school in honor of a great American hero, Pat Tillman.

Several dignitaries were in attendance on Tuesday, with Mayor Greg Stanton, Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone and Pat’s brother Kevin Tillman all sharing inspirational remarks with the students, faculty and media.

Superintendent Dr. Jeff Smith and the school’s principal Dr. Chad Smith also spoke about meaning of the school’s name and their vision for the future of Tillman Middle School.

The school will officially transition for the 2018-2019 school year and will serve as the district’s only dedicated middle school, welcoming sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. This change will help the district recruit and retain quality teachers, increase enrollment, better allocate resources and develop new educational programming.

Frontdoors Media Selects Journalism and Magazine Industry Veteran Karen Werner as New Editor

Evans Communications' sister company Frontdoors Media, a digital media company that publishes Frontdoors Magazine and provides extensive online coverage of the Valley’s philanthropy and lifestyle, has selected industry veteran Karen Werner as its new Editor.

Werner is an accomplished writer with experience in a number of different platforms, and frequently serves as an adjunct professor of editing and magazine writing at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. She is the founder and principal of KWink Media, a consulting firm that helps create publications and manage communications for a number of prominent for-profit and nonprofit organizations.

Werner previously worked as Executive Editor of Arizona Foothills Magazine, and has produced publications for the Musical Instrument Museum, the Arizona Office of Tourism, and the City of Glendale. She also created and served as Editor in Chief of Wavelength, a magazine for Phoenix-area NPR affiliates KJZZ and KBAQ.

Frontdoors Media Publisher Andrea Tyler Evans, who bought Frontdoors Media along with her husband Tom in early 2017, said Werner’s expertise and exceptional writing skills make her an ideal choice to lead the Frontdoors editorial team moving forward.

“We are very excited to welcome Karen to the team and to have her take the lead in advancing our editorial coverage of the community,” Evans said. “Karen is an ideal choice to take the vision we’ve created for the publication and help it grow and expand its reach in the Valley. We’re looking forward to seeing what kind of positive impact she can have on our coverage across our digital platforms.”

Werner will succeed previous Frontdoors editor Mike Saucier, who passed away on November 1 after a brief battle with cancer. Evans said that Saucier was instrumental in the creation of the vision for the revamped magazine and digital platform, and Frontdoors Media has been dedicated to Saucier’s memory in perpetuity.

Werner said she is looking forward to the new position and helping shape the company’s editorial approach moving forward.

“I am honored and excited to take on this role and to build on the impressive foundation Mike Saucier laid,” she said. “I believe my experience across print and digital platforms coupled with my deep interest in the Valley’s philanthropic community will continue to drive the success of the Frontdoors brand.”

Frontdoors Media celebrates the people and groups who give generously and work to build the future of our community. It’s the premier source of information – and inspiration – for those who strive to make the Valley of the Sun a better place to live. For more information, visit www.frontdoorsmedia.com.
